Embracing Unconventional Paths
The Story Behind My Artistic Journey
Let’s keep exploring the story of Raining Joy Arts and the creation of this small business. I hope that each post will be insightful and interesting for you as an art-enthusiast or budding artist yourself!
Hey there, fellow art enthusiasts! I'm excited to share a little bit about my background and how it has shaped my journey as an artist. Unlike many traditional artists, my path to creativity has been anything but conventional.
First things first—let's debunk the myth that all artists have formal training. Nope, not me. Despite immersing myself in every art class my high school offered (twice over, no less), I made a conscious decision to forgo art school. Why? Because I didn't want my passion for art to feel like homework or a chore. I wanted it to remain a source of joy and freedom, untouched by the constraints of academia.
Growing up, I was surrounded by art. My mother, an oil painter, was my biggest inspiration. Despite juggling the chaos of raising four kids, she always made time for her art. It was her sanctuary, her escape from the demands of everyday life. Witnessing her dedication and passion planted the seeds of creativity within me.
My mom loved painting boats, like the ferry we took to Martha’s Vineyard each year.
While I may not have pursued formal art education, I found my calling in a different field—environmental education. As a teacher and naturalist, I have dedicated my career to helping young people foster a deeper connection with the natural world. Through hands-on experiences and exploration, I strive to ignite a sense of wonder and curiosity in the hearts of my students.
Art as Expression of Experience: For me, art isn't just about creating pretty pictures—it's a reflection of my personal history and experiences. My artistic journey is deeply intertwined with my role as a teacher and naturalist. Each brushstroke is imbued with the lessons I've learned and the connections I've forged with nature and the world around me.
I have been a teacher, hiking guide, and naturalist for over 20 years. This is me leading a hike in Denali National Park,
By embracing an unconventional path, I've been able to break free from the boxes society often tries to confine us to. My art is a testament to the idea that creativity knows no boundaries—it's a journey of self-discovery and expression, guided by passion and authenticity.
So there you have it—a glimpse into the unconventional background that has shaped my artistic journey. Whether you're a formally trained artist or a self-taught creative soul, remember that there's no right or wrong way to express yourself through art. Embrace your unique path and let your creativity soar.
