Alaska's environment is changing due to the spruce bark beetle infestation killing many mature spruce trees. People fear a large fire could wipe out our forests. I wanted to envision this future environment. Black-backed woodpeckers are already here and will thrive in the burned stands. The background colors represent the open skies and new vegetation, including the abundant fireweed that flourishes after a fire.
